El Cortijo del Fraile (The Friar's Farmhouse)

This farmhouse has inspired two great writers who based their works on the crime occurred here on 22th July 1928: Por Un Puñado de Claveles by Carmen de Burgos and Bodas de Sangre by Federico Garcia Lorca.

The Cortijo del Fraile was built by the monks of the Convent of Santo Domingo. The building was erected in the 18th century for agropastoral exploitation. Olive trees and vines were grown there. The country house has a chapel, a mausoleum, a water tank and wells. Its architecture is typical of Níjar. It has got two wings. One was used to live and housework and the other has a big yard and a farm. The highlight is its chapel.
